Poutini Waitaiki

 Poutini Waitaiki

Poutini is a taniwha. He discovers a woman by the name of Waitaiki. He Loves her and wants her for himself. So he takes her and heads to the south island. Her husband Tamaahua is angry! He uses a tekateka to find out where they are (magic). So he chases Poutini around the country trying to find Waitaiki.

Poutini wants Waitaiki for himself so he turns her into pounamu and rests her up the Arahura river. Poutini now cruises along the coastline where he protects his precious pounamu. Arahura river is where Poutini took Waitaiki so he can keep her to himself. Tamaahua was sad about Waitaiki, that she was turned into pounamu. He’s very sad that he won’t see her again because there is not a way to turn her back to her human. This is one part of Maori history, but the river, Arahura river, is still real. Waitaiki is pounamu, and you can find her as pounamu.

Penguin Report

Fiordland crested penguin/tawaki: New Zealand native sea and shore birds: Conservation

Snares Crested Penguin

The Snares Crested Penguin is one of the endangered penguins because their population is dropping low. These Snares Crested Penguins can climb trees and they are one of the most amazing species in the world.

Habitat:

The penguins nest mostly within the forest of the North East Island. They sometimes migrate to one of the small Islands to breed their babies in winter.

Food: They only feed on squid, krill and small fish. Snares Penguins only eat squid, krill and small fish for them to hunt. They dive into the water and catch them with their beak, and feed to their young ones as well.

Threats: There are no threats to the Snares Island, and the breeding Islands are free from predators. Sea leopards and sea lions are the predator to the snare penguins. They eat any type of penguin, but not on Snares Island. The Snares Island does not have any predators or threats to the Island.

Behavior: Snares Crested Penguins are a small group of penguins and they can only be spotted on Stewart Island. The coolest thing about this species is that they climb trees. Penguins have been spotted on branches up to 2 m off the ground.

Lifecycle: The male penguin keeps the egg warm so it can hatch. When the egg hatches they start to eat some fish, while a couple of days or weeks later they start to get fluffier. A couple of months later, they start to get bigger into adults. Once they are big, now they can get started to hunt for food so they can survive.

Born to run and training

We have been learning about an athlete called Arthur Lybiard. We have been reading about him and we also did a time line and a training letter how to train for the Olympic. The training letter is for you to train for the Olympic games you don't need to do it, you can do it for fun. The timeline is where you can find facts about Arthur Lybiard. I hope you enjoyed it. Bye...

Training

If you're going to train for the Olympics, you have to be ready. If you're an athlete, and you want to be in the Olympic games, then you have to train very hard to be in the Olympic games.  You have to train every day if you want to become an Olympic champion, you have to do the sports that you like to do. You can make a new sport that you haven’t done before, it would be great. For one reason I never did cricket before, but when I played it, it was really fun. It would give you a new talent for sport.

To be ready…

  1. You have to train your best to be in the Olympic games. Choose your favorite sport, and do the training with a friend or be alone for the training for your favourite sport. If you like hockey you can do the training for that or another sport, like tennis, basketball, netball, soccer or other ones.

Find a team...

2.  If you want to be in the Olympic games, you will need a team and a coach for the training. You will have to have a team because you will need help because if you don’t have a team, you won’t be able to go in the Olympics finals and that would be really sad. So find one of the best athletes you have heard of and start training for the Olympics.

Eat healthy...

3.  If you want to be an athlete you will have to eat healthy food. You will have to eat things that are healthy food like an apple, banana, orange, tomato and others but you can’t eat unhealthy food. You will eat healthy, you will train every day to be in the Olympic games if you want to.

Training and Competing…

4. You are ready for any sport you have to do in the Olympic games. The training was for competing, athletes did compete in the Olympics. That is why you train and train to become a better athlete that you haven’t been for. Your team is counting on you to compete for the Olympics finals.

Good luck...

5.  You have reached the Olympic finals. Get ready to be the Olympic champion. You have to be ready for anything you have been waiting for. Your team is counting on you, so make your family proud and your team.

Harakeke Uses and Instruction

We have read a book about Harakeke. We did a google drawing about Harakeke uses and instructions on how to weave your own Harakeke flower. If you did the Harakeke flower, send a command and a picture so you can give it to a family member or a friend as a gift. Hope you enjoy.  😀

How to weave a flower Purpose - We are learning how to weave a flower so we can use them as decorations. Equipment list A couple of flax, scissors, Beads, Tiny shells and a needle. Steps to make harakeke flower
 1. Split the flax in half (from the sharp point down) but leave about 15 cm still joined (leave longer if you want a longer stem)
 2. Lie the flax flat on a table and start by crossing the left leaf under the right one. Then fold that now left one back under the right one.
 3. Then continue to fold the one that’s now on the left under the right one, and you are going to keep doing this same pattern until you get to the end. So, to recap, always fold the one that is on the left under the one that’s on the right.
 4. Eventually, you will get to the end of the leaf and because of the way the folds work it ends up in the shape of a flower.
 5. Pull it around in a circle quite tight so that it almost looks like a rose. Then you want to get your pieces of shell or paua, needle and nylon.
 6. Thread through the leaf and then through your shell or bead. Thread back to the backside of the flower and then to the front again and continue to the back again – knot it off.
 7. The image shows two extra flowers that I have made up. As mentioned earlier these can make a neat little gift as you can pop them in a box and post them – could be a great gift idea for the grandparents!

No girls allowed letter

This week we have been reading about "No girls allowed". We did a letter for the organisers who said girls aren't allow to play rugby. This is my letter.

Dear Organisers
Hi my name is Riley, I understand your reasons why you don't want girls in the rugby tournament, but I have some reasons why girls should be.
1st reason, When girls play rugby they will know how powerful they are in their own unique body.

2nd reason, Rugby tournaments are really good for girls because they get taken down by boys and they will know how to get back up again.

3rd reason, girls should always be better at rugby than boys and it is unfair when girls don’t get a chance to play in a tournament.

Waitangi Day 2021

Waitangi day is the day that family's and friends come together for this day.

The Treaty of Waitangi was been signed in 1840, Feb 6. There was an misunderstanding of who should have the power to control to lead, and war. The misunderstanding happened because there were to different languages and there was a anger.

This is why NZ celebrate the Treaty of Waitangi since 1974 on Feb 6.

I hope you enjoyed Waitangi day.
